Columbia University Wiki

Columbia University has a wiki. Is this the first University in the country to do so?

  1. It’s probably one of the first, but…

    Harvard already had this:

Still, WikiCU is editable by anyone, which ranks it higher imho.

  3. this is interesting. i wonder if it goes against the concept of wiki. if harvard students or faculty have something to say, why can’t they say it on wiki? is the idea to compete with wiki? or is the idea that it will only have local topics and information? and where do you draw the line on local and universal? i don’t see the need to have multiple competing wiki’s. but maybe i’m wrong?

  4. One of the nice things about a wiki is that it gives you out of the box content management, publishing and versioning. Even if you aren’t using it as an open wiki (where anybody can contribute) it’s a great way to collaborate on building a document. This appears to be what Harvard has done.

Wikipedia is really limited to being a general purpose encyclopedia, so there’s plenty of room for wiki’s that have some overlap with wikipedia, but handle a subject in more depth. This is the WikiCU model.

Drawing the line between local and universal is pretty difficult, so you do need some editors making that call regardless. On wiki’s this is largely a matter of self-selection, though a wiki admin could opt to be more choosey.
