It seems like the RCN is doing something to interfere with bittorrent tracker communications. The issue seems to only be with tracker communications as downloads and uploads continue to work. There is a workaround, which is to use The Onion Router (TOR) to route tracker communications. Here’s how to do it with Azureus:
- Download and install TOR
- Run TOR. Not setup is really necessary, it starts working right out of the box (NICE!)
- In Azureus, choose “Options” from the “Tools” menu
- Expand the “Connections”menu in the lefthand tab
- Choose the “Proxy Options” item from the list
- In the right hand part of the window, check the boxes for “Enable proxying of tracker communications” and “I have a SOCKS proxy”
- Enter “127.0.0.1” in the Host text box and “9050” in the Port text box
- Click the “Save” button in the lower left corner of the Azureus window
- Restart Azureus
- You are back in business, congrats.

They resolved the issue. I’m leaving the post up, since there is a strong possibility it will happen again and the information also may help other users with other ISPs.

Thanks so much for this post. This is my first exposure to Tor and I love it. My ISP (TimeWarner Business Class) recently began blocking the demonoid tracker. This workaround functions wonderfully.

I’m guessing Time Warner did it for their entire network cause now I’m seeing the same problems with Demonoid..
